Triumph Repair: Rear wheel negative camber, triumph spitfire 1500, 1980 triumph spitfire 1500

Question
I bought a 1980 Triumph Spitfire 1500 about a year ago, and I just drove it on an extended trip for the first time. I'm noticing a very pronounced negative camber on my driver's side rear wheel, but the passenger side looks fine. It had a leftward tilt when I bought it, which I understand is not too uncommon. What causes such a problem, what can be done, and should it concern me to drive the 75 more miles to get home?

Answer
Hi Tom,
The Spitfire has a transverse leaf spring in the rear. First check to see that the center mount is tight and you may have to have the spring rearched if you have a spring company in your area. You can just purchase a new spring or do what I have seen Spitfire owners do and that is either purchase a set coil-over shocks or gas over-oil shocks to lift the back up a little. The negative camber is due to the "swing axle" design and when one side sags (mostly on the drivers side because the car is driven mostly with just a driver in it)
