Triumph Repair: tr-6 tranny, tr 6, drive train

Question
My 72 tr-6 had just gotten inspected by motor vehicles. I drove  it home and the next time I went to start it up, I  could not get the gear out of neutral whether the cluTCH WAS DEPRESSED OR NOT. FOR SOME REASON HOWEVER,I CAN GET INTO REVERSE WHETHER OR NOT THE CLUTCH IS DEPRESSED. wHERE DO I START?

Answer
If I understand you correctly, the car is always in neutral, and you can put it into reverse, but you can't put it into any forward bear. I assume from this, the engine isn't running.

I've experienced this sometimes with a manual transmission, and either rocking the car slightly forward/back, or cranking the engine, you will be able to put it into gear.  At time, the relationship of the gear cluster in the transmission and the mainshaft connected to the drivetrain is such that the gear cluster can't move to allow the teeth to mesh.  getting the relationship of the gear cluster and either engine or drive train to move slightly was usually enough to get it to engage.

If the problem is different, or this doesn't work, please describe in greater detail what specifically  doing, step by step.
