Triumph Repair: water choke on 79 spitfire, robert bentley, good directions

Question
Jim,
The choke is flooding out the carb. when the car is running more on the hot side(which seems to be typical with these cars. I cant find any info on how to repair, replace,or replace with a manual choke. Can you help?
By the way this is my second question to you..you are a great resource...Thanks

Answer
Clarence,

Let me put in my plug for the Robert Bentley repair manual, if you can find the late Spitfire edition.  There are good directions in there for rebuilding the stock carb.

Unfortunately the water choke setup on the late Spitfires is prone to fail with age.

As to swapping for a manual choke setup, it's fairly straight forward.  Keep in mind that you'll need to add a choke cable, either via a new hole in the dashboard or fit it from a bracket below the dash.

Obviously, you'll want a good condition used or rebuild manual choke carb as the replacement, or you'll be having problems again.

Cheers,

Jim
