Triumph Repair: 1977 Spit 1500, monroe shock, cool texas

Question
Hi Jim,

So I read up on back end sagging and have launched into my first project with my "new" Spitfire. My first action is installing monroe shock kit as recommended by Charlie Brown's great article.

HOW oh HOW does one get the new shock with new bushings back into the top bracket? I know there is a trick to it but can find no articles with this tip. I have manuals etc and none describe how to "compress" the bushings enough to insert into the bracket While Still leaving space to insert the bolt. Finally used 2 vice grips to compress by alternating them until fully in place then tap bolt rest of way through.

Charlie's article states to re-use original bushings which are softer than new, is that the best approach?

Thank you

Answer
Linda,

Interesting... I've never had issues getting the "stock" shocks installed.

One idea is to use an adjustable wrench to spread the mount area on the frame just a tad.  Lube the bushing with a bit of Armor All (or equivalent) or even soapy water.

If the old bushings aren't too badly rotted they could be reused... but eventually they will break up in the nice cool Texas weather.  If you can it's better to use quality new bushings.

Cheers,

Jim
