Triumph Repair: Steering play on TR4A, tie rod ends, shaft couplers

Question
Howard, Any ideas on improving the steering play I get at speed on my 66' TR4A.  I thought about Poly bushings for the steering rack but wondering about the steering column as well.  Any ideas????

Answer
Hi Craig,
The only way to find loose play in steering is to look while someone works the steering wheel back and forth (only the free play movement)
Then you will know what action to take. You may have to pull the rack boot loose to see the inner tie rod end of the rack pinion to be loose. If it is the steering rack mounting you need to replace the mounts. If the free play is in the outer tie rod ends you need to replace them. if the free play is in the inner tie rod ends, they can be adjusted by removing shims. If the free play is in the rack pinion itself, that can be adjusted too. The steering shaft couplers are a common point of free play. These may need to be replaced if the rubber has deteriorated.
