Triumph Repair: TR6 Pollution Equipment, pollution control equipment, breather vent

Question
Hi Jim,

To get the car running, the previous owner fiddled with the pollution control equipment on my 75 TR6 - There are plugged lines and lines that lead to nowhere and I can't be sure if it's completely or partially bypassed. As an aside, I had oil coming up through the dip-stick opening which stopped when I removed the rubber cap that was plugging the valve cover opening where a hose used to be.

Could you provide some direction to either fully connect it, or fully disconnect it, which ever is most logical? (There are no emissions issues with older cars in Ontario, so I'd lean towards bypassing if it's easy enough)

Thanks,
-Cam

Answer
Cam,

Some of the emissions gear reduced performance, but some other parts of the system actually help driveability.

In your example, the breather from the valve cover should have been hooked up to a t-fitting and then to the twin Strombergs.  Pulling excess pressure out of the engine is a good thing as it helps keep oil inside the block, as you're learning.

As the cars were built everything was designed to work together.  Unless you're going to do a complete rebuild and step back to an earlier configuration you're probably best off replacing some of the basics like the engine breather vent.

Cheers,

Jim
