Triumph Repair: 1970 Triumph Mark 3, windshield wiper motor, brass inserts

Question
QUESTION: I am replacing the windshield wiper motor and cannot get the gear  out of the
old housing to put in the new motor housing. I have removed the clip and
washer off the bolt on the outside but the gear does not want to budge. Can
you help.
Thanks

ANSWER: Hi John,
After you remove the cover plate you should see the end of the shaft that the large gear rides on and it should have an "E" clip and maybe several very thin washers. Be sure you get all of the thin washers as if you leave one it can slip into the grove in the shaft that the "E" clip was in and that will prevent the gear from sliding off the shaft. If all of the thin washers are off and the gear won't come off check it for free play, It may be frozen on the shaft and thus what made the first motor go bad.

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply. I was able to remove the gear and the shaft from the
housing. There is no free play of the gear on the shaft, obviously frozen.
I have ordered a new gear and my question is are the gear and shaft separate
pieces and what is the best way to put the shaft in the housing? The housing
is lined with brass inserts which I push out when putting old shaft in housing.

Answer
If the housing had brass bushings then I would have guessed that the shaft was suppose to turn with the gear. There is no reason to put bushings in the case unless the shaft was designed to rotate. When you have the shaft sticking out the back (where the mounts are) and that is where the "E" clip was, then the shaft was made on to the gear and does not separate from the gear. Just be sure to lube the shaft well before installing the new gear and shaft and watch for the cancel switch location to see that it is the same as the old one. Sometimes there is an adjustable end preload for the armature shaft too.
