Changed battery after old battery froze,and revs are maintaining between 1700rpm - 1900rpm at idle ,while driving revs are high. While idling car seems to have some mis firing going on as well. tried disconnecting and reconnecting battery but no joy. is there some kind of reset? Never experienced this before with any car.

It sounds like your ecu has gone into reprogramming mode.  Try running the car as you normally drive, and you should find that the engine will settle back down.  You did not specify if there was an accidental disturbance of some of the connectors, such as the MAF sensor or throttle cable.  If that all checks out, see if the engine settles back in; it should do so within 50 miles.
