Triumph Repair: Triumph spitfire disc brake removal, flat tip screwdriver, self tapping screw

Question
Dear Jim, I would like to know how to remove the grease caps from the front hubs of my '71 spitfire. I have the bolts holding the rotor to the hub off i just need to know if there is a certain trick in taking off the cap.
Thanks.

Answer
Alex,

There are a couple of different methods that'll work.

Some of the grease caps had a hole in the center.  On those caps screw in a self tapping screw that's just a bit bigger diameter of the hole and it'll grab the cap and push it away from the axle spindle.

Otherwise you can try carefully tapping the cap from side to side with a rubber mallet to get it to pop loose.

If the cap is rusted/crusted into the hub the worst case solution is to take a flat tip screwdriver and drive it into the cap where it meets the hub and use it to pry the cap loose.

Cheers,

Jim
