Triumph Repair: Overdrive Transmission for Spitfire, overdrive units, speed tranny

Question
Hello,

I would like to swap out my original 4 speed tranny for a rebuilt overdrive trans for my 78 Spit. Or I was thining about one of those conversion kits I keep hearing about. Have you come across any success stories about conversion kits? And hopefully ones that don't cost and arm and a leg (I don't have any extras since the price of gas went up...).

Thanks, Bob

Answer
Hi Bob,
I don't have any experience with any of the conversions but have with the overdrive units and I find that most of the overdrives outlast the cars. An overdrive is just about necessary to be able to keep up with traffic on todays expressways. There may be some conversions to 5 speed boxes that work well but I don't have any experience with them. An overdrive and gear box is close to a "bolt in" so it is an easy installation. There is a little added wiring but even if you don't get the O/D wiring, it is easy to wire your self.
