Triumph Repair: * Emission Hoses-79 Spitfire *, crankcase pressure, spitfire 1500

Question
Howard:
Just picked up a 79 Spitfire 1500. Looks like the emission system has been bypassed. I'm in Ohio and we have no inspections (except Cinci). The hose from the valve cover that conects to the carb and the canister has been plugged at the line leading to the canister and the canister is removed. It now just goes from the valve cover to the carb. The question is: Can I just plug it at the carb and at the valve cover and remove the hose and assembly or do I need to keep this open? Car runs good now.

Answer
Hi Don,
You need to leave the hose from the valve cover connected either to an air filter or the back of the carb. This is the crankcase vent system and if you block it off you will build crankcase pressure and cause a lot of oil burning and oil leaks at gaskets and seals.
