Triumph Repair: 76 Spit - EGR light, haynes manual, service interval

Question
I knew I was forgetting something.

Ever since I got the car, the EGR light has been on -- I take this is something
to do with emissions, Exhaust Gas Regulator valve or something?  It's
mentioned in the Haynes manual but doesn't say much about it.  Does this
need to be fixed? Any ideas on cost? What happens if I don't fix it?

Thanks again!

Answer
Thomas,

From what I can tell the EGR light was tripped off the service interval indicator.  I don't recall there being any actual sensor on the EGR setup that could determine a fault.

What the EGR valve is doing is recycling some of the exhaust gases back through the carb under certain conditions to better burn the mixture.

If the EGR isn't opening then it opens the possibility that the fuel mixture can be a bit off.  That's testing best left for a shop with a good exhaust analyzer.

Cheers,

Jim
