Triumph Repair: running to hot, radiator system, radiator cap

Question
QUESTION: Hi Jim,
I own a 75 spitfire and I,m haveing a problem with it running to hot.  I had the radiator boiled and pressur checked and that was ok, also I replaced the thermostat, and I add an elecronic fan and finelly I put a new radiator cap on it.  I just cannot keep the car from running hot.  Please advice as to what I overlooking

Thank you in advance
David

ANSWER: David,

How do you know it's running hot?  Temp gauge or is it overflowing the radiator system?

If it's the temp gauge there's a distinct possibility that either the sender has failed or the voltage regulator for the gauges could be bad.  Does the gas gauge seem to work correctly?

If it is actually running hot it's typically either timing or mixture out of adjustment.

Jim

QUESTION: Hi Jim,
Thank you for the advice. I have one more question on this matter what is the proper timing setting for this car.

once again thank you in advance
David

Answer
David,

There should be a sticker on the inside of the bonnet with the correct timing settings.

If you don't have the sticker, the timing should be set to 2 degrees ATDC at idle with the distributor vacuum advance unplugged and blocked.

Cheers,

Jim
