Triumph Repair: installing the shifter back on, forward gear, move one

Question
Hi Howard, I removed the gear shifter box from the transmission the gasket was hanging on the out the side and was leaking alot of oil on the transmission. So when I took it off I remove the four bolts and wiggled the shifter a little and it came right off. I replaced the gasket and I see it has a ball on the end of the rod and is fitted in the Transmission. I thought I had put it in a socket but now. I am just stuck in a forward gear. What the best way to fit the box back on what should I look for what is the objective with the rod with the ball end on it? can you help me get out of gear? Oh yeah everything worked just fine until I did this work clutch is fine...

Answer
Take that back off and use a screwdriver to align the three rails so they have all three rails in the same position. If you look at the ball you should notice it is flat on both sides so it will only move one of the shift rails at a time. When you assemble it you just need to align all three rails so they are all side by side before you slip it in.
