Triumph Repair: Spitfire 1500 carb, 1974 Spitfire, e mail address, flame trap

Question
QUESTION: My 1974 Spitfire has a thermal switch in the lower radiator hose that goes to the forward [third] flame trap and then to a vacuum line that goes to the upper rear area of the Stromberg carb. This is specified as a 150CD4.[see page95 of Victoria catalog No.S.G.48] The line in question terminates in an elbow marked 9. There is no apparent connector on or about this area. Wassup?

ANSWER: Hi Bob, It must be something someone did because I have never seen a thermal sw in a lower hose. For what reason? Three flame traps? I have some Victoria British cats somewhere so I will dig them out to see what you are referring to.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hi Howard, The thermal switch is to kill the vacuum to the distributor advance. This increases the RPM to fast idle When the engine overheats in prolonged slow speed driving. This was a late 1974 modification on the 1493cc engine. My carb and the hoses and flame trap set up looks like OEM stuff- except for the orphan hose with elbow number 9.

Answer
The only vacuum diagram I found was from a Factory service bulletin  about the EGR system but it does show the three vapor traps that Victory British calls flame traps. It may be of some help. Give me an e-mail address and I will mail it to you. If you don't want your e-mail address shown either make the response private or e-mail it to me. longez8@bellsouth.net
