Triumph Repair: Ignition coils, external resistor, nice ride

Question
Hello, Jim
I have a 1976 spitfire and I need to replace the coil it is leaking fluid.
I went to a part store to get one but they don't know what to sell me, it has an external resistor and they say I can use a coil with an internal resistor if I remove the external resistor, what are your thoughts? Note: this is not a race car just a everyday nice ride.
Thanks

Answer
Kenneth,

You'll be much better off sticking to the original setup, it'll make trouble shooting easier in the future if you haven't "modded" the wiring setup.

Any of the vendors listed on the VTR website (www.VTR.org) should be able to provide the proper replacement coil quickly.  I personally have had good dealings with Spitbits (www.spitbits.com), British Parts Northwest (www.bpnorthwest.com) and Ted Schumacher (www.tsimportedautomotive.com).  There are other great vendors on the list, look to see if maybe there's one local to your area.

Cheers,

Jim
