Triumph Repair: tr-6 starting, fuel mixture, battery engine

Question
My 76 tr-6 starts right up when cold, but refuses to start when warmed up. It readily starts by push starting the car, but not by cranking. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.

Answer
Mark,

Have you taken a look at the spark plugs?  Sooty black or clean white?

When you try to start the car warm do you use the choke?

Do you need to use the choke when the car is cold?

Have you put a voltmeter on the battery?  Engine off and engine on?

Sounds like a could of things.  First off, starting issues are usually either fuel mixture or timing.  If it's starting easily cold then I'd think the mixture is a bit too rich.  And that can cause problems with warm starts.

As to starting easier with a push start either the battery isn't holding a charge (or being charged with the car running) or the starter motor is getting tired.

Start with the simple things.  Check the plugs (engine cold), check the timing with the engine running, clean all the battery cable connections, at the battery and at the solenoid.

Do it all one step at a time.  After any changes try starting the car to see if you've fixed the problem.

Let me know how it works out, whether you've fixed the problem or need more assistance.

Cheers,

Jim
