Triumph Repair: Spit III Stromberg carb, float chamber, subject car

Question
I am rebuilding subject car that has not been run in 25 yrs.  When I took the Stromberg 150 single carb apart the bottom 3 or so inches of the needle looks corroded, surface is rough, but I am not sure (1)if it is designed to be that way or does it need to be a totally polished surface from top to tip.
(2)It is the early non-biased type.  If polished is answer, can I polish it or does it have to be replaced

Answer
Hi Lamar,
If the needle can be cleaned off easily with fine emory paper and no pits are noted with a magnifying glass, you can probably reuse the needle. However, the fact that it was corroded indicates you need to do a very good clean out of the whole carb. Keep in mind that the carb is mainly zink not aluminum. Also note in the bottom of the float chamber, many had a plastic plug just under the jet. The plastic plug was covered with a thin metal cap and the plastic plug had a rubber "O" ring to seal it. This must be removed if you have it dipped. These are easily broken trying to remove and replace them.
Let me know how you do.
