Triumph Repair: 76 spitfire MC, tandem master, rear brakes

Question
Looking for the correct exploded view diagrams for the tandem Master Cylinder( small cap ). The secondary circuit does not want to pump fluid.Triumph manual is vague. One of the leading seal appears to act as a one-way valve. the little 3-fingered discs' position is in question.

Thanks,

Jerry

Answer
Jerry,

Not quite sure what you mean.  The rear brakes aren't working?

First off, the '76 Spitfire should be a large cap M/C.  The small cap m/c were fitted to the '78 and later cars.  What's the Comm # on your car?

The Bentley manual for the late Spitfire (ISBN 0-8376-0122-3) has the exploded diagram for the small cap master on page 377.  The "wide" end of the secondary setup is pointing into the back of the m/c.

The three fingered disc is in the large mouth M/C.

Does your car have a depression in the firewall to clear the m/c?  And does the m/c fit into that depression?

Otherwise it sounds like either someone has mixed some parts on you or you're not describing it accurately.

Cheers,

Jim
