Triumph Repair: 1977 Spitfire Carb and Timing, stromberg cd150, dashpot

Question
I have a 77 Spitfire that was backfireing through the exhaust until I adjusted the timming to 2 degrees below top dead center as listed on the hood. The car ran fine and did not backfire during test but when I tried to restart, the engine would not start.  I am having a hard time trying to figure out what kind of Stromburg Carb I have on this car.  Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Thomas,

If it is still the original carb (after 29 years) it will be a Stromberg CD150.  Either the mechanical choke or water choke version, depending upon whether it's a 49 state car or a California version.

The dashpot should say something like "CD 150" cast into the aluminum.

It sounds like either the mixture is off or the distributor timing is still a bit off.  I presume you set the timing using a proper timing light?

Cheers,

Jim
