Triumph Repair: 74 Spitfire, float bowl, o ring

Question
My future son-in-law has a 74 spitfire, he let me drive it and it was great, but after that he tried to start it and it wouldn't run, he found gas pouring out of the bottom of the carb. I checked it and found a plastic plug and a o-ring had fallen out. I put them back in and it ran ok, but the next day he tried it and the plug fell out again. I think the problem is the 0-ring has dried up and shrunk. We can't find the right size of o-ring. If I had the measurements of them than I could probably get a replacement.
Can you help us out?

Answer
John,

As that plug/o-ring keep gasoline from dumping on the exhaust it's a good idea to make sure you have a setup that will stay in place.

The plastic plug has retaining ears that keep it in place in the float bowl.  When they lose their grip... the plug will fall.  Considering the car is 32 years old, it's not unreasonable to have it fail.

They are available new from the specialist parts suppliers that can be found listed on the VTR website (www.VTR.org).
