Triumph Repair: Spitfire 1500 - Removing Cal emissions, conversion article, california cars

Question
I have a 1978 TR Spitfire 1500 that was a California car when originally manufactured. I don't live in CA, and don't need that stuff. Do you know of an article or procedure for removing all of that hardware? I'm just starting to rebuild the entire vehicle and would like to get rid of the extra stuff in the process.

Answer
John,

I'm don't know of a "conversion" article, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I guess a fair question is:  what kind of rebuild are you going for?  Do you just want to make the car a 1978 spec 49 state car?  Or improve performance beyond that level?

Another question is what will your local regulations allow?

There are a few obvious changes made for the California cars such as the anti-runon valve and the automatic choke carb.  Then there's additional vapor recovery lines associated with the anti-runon and water lines for the automatic choke.

One approach might be to pick a year, say 1973.  Look at how the engine and accessories were set up and emulate that for your car.

Cheers,

Jim
