Triumph Repair: Idle and Transmission, trans tunnel, british marques

Question
Answer -
Carl,

Let's see if I can cover all the questions.

1).  It sounds like either the mixture is off or the fuel level in the float bowl is not correct.

Have you tried doing plug cuts to judge overall mixture?  When the car misbehaves does pulling out the choke make it better or worse?

Is there oil in the dashpot?  Is the diaphram still intact or torn?

2)  Was the "derby" shaped piece plastic or metal?  If plastic, it sounds like possibly the plastic pieces in the shift lever retainer may have cracked.  The Rover factory part number is 1x519770.  Also it sounds like possible the clutch is not disengaging completely (stuck in gear issue).... as the clutch is hydraulic it may need to be bleed... or the hydraulics rebuilt.

3).  I don't know of any specialists in the Denver area.   You might look for someone that specializes in any of the British marques (MG, Rover, Jaguar, etc), they may be able to point you to someone who can work on your Triumph.

Cheers,

Follow-Up Question:

Jim

Thanks for the answers Jim!  The "derby" shaped piece is metal, about an inch and 3/4 in diameter and there is grease in the concave part of it.  I would be happy to email you a picture of it if you like-- just let me know where I can send it.  In tinkering with it this morning, I again tried to get it out of gear to no avail.  The gear shif moves around almost freely, like it is in neutral already, but I can't get it to switch gears or go into neutral.  Is it possible that the shift lever "cam off" inside of the transmission itself?

Thanks again!
Carl

Answer
Carl,

If the center of the derby is open it really sounds like the retainer cap for the shift lever.  So yes, the shift lever could be out of the trans.  The simple way to check is to undo the shift lever boot from the trans tunnel.  If the shift lever is loose it'll come off in your hand.

Cheers,

Jim
