Triumph Repair: Triumph Transverse Leaf Spring and Sag, rear leaf spring, leafsprings

Question
Jim,  Thanks for your previous help, it saved hours.  I ve installed 2 different used leafsprings, and both times, the spit sags on the driver s side. I ve left the vertical links loose until weight is on the spring both times. Am I missing something, or do I really have 3 bad springs in my garage?

Answer
Jonathan,

Leaf spring sag is one of the constants in Spitfire ownership.  It's very possible that your 2 "spare" springs are also bent.

The good news is that the old springs can be re-arched by a professional shop.  Look in the yellow pages in the automotive section, there's usually a suspension specialist around.

Another thing to consider is that as the rear leaf spring sags it puts more load on the rest of the suspension so it's possible that some of the other components (bushings, front springs) are also a tad "out" of spec.

A common fix to the Spitfire rear spring sag is to fit air helper shocks with individual pressure valves so you can tweak how much "help" each side recieves.

Cheers,

Jim
