Triumph Repair: 1970 gt6+ transmission, clutch pedal, synchros

Question
Hello Jim,
I have a 1970 gt6. I had a transmission problem down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. I had a new syncro installed in the tranny. The transmission shop guy said the old one was not particularly bad when replaced. The transmission still chunks when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. I also installed a new throw-out bearing before assembling.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Joe

Answer
Joe,

How long have you owned this particular GT6?  Have you driven another GT6 as a means of comparison?

There is a consensus amongst the Triumph community that the after market synchros are not up to the original standard.  Whether that is a function of the wear that the transmissions have now or whether is a function of dimensioning and quality control at the parts manufacturer I don't know.

The synchros on the Triumph transmissions were adequate for their day but you won't get top fuel dragster shifting speeds from GT6 gearbox unless you double clutch your shifts.  Double clutching is a means of matching gear speeds before trying to engage the gears past the synchro.

The only other thing I can think of is that the clutch isn't fully disengaging.  A question would be where how far the clutch pedal is off the floor before the clutch starts to grab.
Cheers,

Jim
