Triumph Repair: Triumph Tr7 will not idle, stromberg carbs, vacuum lines

Question
I am having problems with a 1977 tr7 i just bought. It has set for a few years but seems to run ok, but it will not idle below 1500rpm without stalling out.It has the dual Stromberg carbs. What should I look for to slove the problem.

Thanks for your help

Answer
Mike,

The late TR7s had twin Stromberg carbs with an automatic choke.. that only works on one carb.  It's not uncommon for the choke mechanism to fail.

It's also not uncommon for one of the many air lines/vacuum lines to fail on the carb setup.

It's also really not uncommon to have a previous owner mix up proper connections on the vacuum lines.  That means getting a good repair manual and hoping it'd detailed enough to show all the possible configurations as during the '70s it sometimes seemed that the Triumphs changed on a daily basis.

It does sound like you have an air leak somewhere that's causing the low idle issue.  An old trick was to start the car (outdoors!!) and use a can of carb cleaner to slowly spray some of the connections and the throttle shafts... if the engine speed changes you found an airleak.

Cheers,
