Triumph Repair: triumph spitfire 1500 74, swing axles, triumph spitfire 1500

Question
why are the rear wheels leaning inward?

Answer
Because the Spitfire has swing axles?

I suppose you mean "why do the tops of the rear wheels lean inward"?

In addition to the swing axles that pivot at the universal joint at the differential, the Spitfire uses a transverse leaf spring for the rear suspension.  As the spring ages and loses.. well.. it's "spring" it doesn't push the body work up as much, so the rear of the car is lower.  As we said, the Spitfire has the swing axles, so as the car body gets lower the geometry of the suspension causes the rear wheels to exhibit negative camber.

If it's excessive, then there are several corrective actions you can take.  One is to get a new spring (or have the current spring re-arched).  Another is to fit a set of air "helper" shocks.
