Triumph Repair: 74 TR6 smokes, valve job, valve guides

Question
just purchased 74 TR6 with about  70000, records indicate no major engine work.
I test drove it I did not notice smoking. When I drove it home I noticed a blueish white smoke all the time and a strong smell coming back into car with top down.
I think I need an engine job but the car runs fine has power and does not hesitate.
Thanks.

Answer
this sounds like valve guides or seals. with an engine that otherwise seems ok, the valve area wears out at about half of the engine life. have a good shop do it or send the head off for a valve job. the down side is some mechanics say after a valve job is done it's puts pressure on the rings and problems start there. I would do it then see how it goes. dave
