Triumph Repair: trans problem, tail shaft, correct tools

Question
well i just e-mailed you earlier today well since then i was able to discover that the reverse gear itself is worn out.can i replace just the reverse gear with out disassembleing the whole trans.it looks as though i can remove the tail shaft housing to access it.i also found out that it is a 75 trans.

Answer
Steve,

I don't honestly know.  I presume you mean that the small "idler" gear that slides into mesh with the reverse gear (on the mainshaft cluster) and with the shifting collar?

I guess it might be possible to remove just that part without pulling the mainshaft out.  Removing the mainshaft isn't really that difficult with the correct tools.. but without them it can be a real bear.

I guess my only hesitation would be that if the idler gear gave out then what shape are the other two gears in?  Those can only be replaced by pulling the whole trans apart.  And if that gear is trashed, what other parts in the trans might have been damaged by the shavings?  Just a thought.

Cheers,

Jim
