Triumph Repair: TR6 Vacuum servo repair, robert bentley publishers, vacuum servo

Question
My TR6 braking action has begun to deteriorate.  The pressure I have to apply to stop is getting real high.  The brake pedal does not go to the floor so I assume that it is not because the brakes need bleeding.

Can you give me an idea how hard it is to install the rebuild kit (~$23, rather than $350 for a new vacuum servo).  I have taken the servo unit out.  It had a good deal (~ 8 oz) of fluid in it; I assume brake fluid.  I had rebuilt the master cylinder about 18 months ago when it was leaking.

For the rebuild, do I need to mechanically separate the 'crimped' housing?   I can't tell from the parts kit pictures if I need to disassemble the housing.  All I was able to remove easily was a rubber seal and metal washer from the master cylinder side.  I could not get the brake pedal side disassembled at all, although the parts catalog looks like it should come apart.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
John,

I'll be honest and admit that I haven't had to deal with the brake servo on my '73 TR6 yet.

I'd highly recommend getting a quality repair manual for your car before undertaking such a critical job as the brake servo.  Robert Bentley Publishers produces a manual that is essentially a reprint of the factory book for the TR6.

Cheers,

Jim
