Triumph Repair: What is my 1980 Red 1980 Spitfire with 33000 miles worth?, factory alloy wheels, car mileage

Question

Answer
Richard,

That's a tough question.  On a new or recent model car, mileage is usually enough of an indicator to judge condition of the vehicle.

On a 24 year old vehicle, there are many other factors to consider.

First off, what is the basic condition of the car?  Is there evidence of accident damage (look inside the front of the bonnet).  What shape is the suspension in?  Shocks?  Bushings?  U-joints?

Is it well maintained with a very good original finish?  Is there any rust?  Is the soft top in good condition?  Interior?  Is all the emissions equipment there and functioning properly? (don't laugh, that means a lot to the value on a late model Spitfire).

Then there's the question of any options/upgrades.  Overdrive is a big plus and worth $500+ when figuring the vehicle value.  Is there a sound system?  Driving lights?  Factory alloy wheels?  Aftermarket alloys?  Better tires?

A final thought is where you're located.  A convertible car in sunny southern California will be worth more than one in Alaska.

Without better information I really can't give a precise value.  In general terms, if the car is in good running condition and still basically original a reasonable value would be anywhere from $1000 to $5000.  Deduct for any major problems and add for any major options or improvements.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

Jim
