UK Car Repair: Clutch, clutch cable, biting point

Question
Hi Christian, not to sure but I think it's a clutch problem that I have.  I have a 2001 Renault Clio 1.2 16V, when the engine is running and i'ts in neutral I have to really force the gearstick to get any gears.  I have also noticed that when I do manage to get it into gear the car tends to creep forward even with the clutch peddle on the floor. Is this something that I may be able to fix myself or is it a garage job?  Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.  Bob.

Answer
The clutch cable has a wing-nut on the gearbox end. Look around the gearbox for the end of the clutch cable, get someone to pump the pedal so you can see it moving -  tighten the wingnut, leaving just a bit of slack/play -

If you don't leave any slack the clutch will never fully engage and will cook itself.

You have a bit of choice as to how high/low you want the biting point, leave a little more slack for a lower biting point, leave just a tiny bit of slack to have a high biting point.

Can't find the manual but it's a pretty simple job -

Check the length of the clutch cable for any crushed/split squashed parts, if it looks bad then get it replaced, it could snap- but if the outer cover looks healthy you're OK to adjust it like this. Just if the sheath is damaged it will rub on the cable and eventually snap.
