UK Car Repair: 1995 Land rover discovery V-8 3.9L, land rover discovery, starter solenoid

Question
QUESTION: Car will not start. When turn on the radio, headlights, interior lights are functioning properly. When trying to start car headlights do not dim there is a brief noise ( not a clicking noise) last for about a second and then nothing happens. Battery and terminals look good. Do you have any ideas?

ANSWER: The problem appears to be in the starter circuit.  Check that there is a feed from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid, if so,  the starter is faulty. Check all connections are tight before changing it. You can also test it by taking a hot feed from the battery directly to the starter, to make sure.

QUESTION: what is the easy way to remove the starter. I have removed the positive cable going to the battery to the solenoid. However, getting or even seeing the mounting bolts for the starter is difficult. There is a heat shield blocking the view. Do you have any ideas.

Answer
First, you must disconnect the battery GROUND/EARTH cable. On the same connector as the main cable there should be one more that goes to the vehicle fuse box then a separate smaller cable which comes from the ignition to operate the solenoid. You need to see if this small one has a feed when you try to start it.  To get it out is difficult you will need some special tools and the heat shield has to be removed.
