UK Car Repair: Jaguar x-type 2.5 (2002), jaguar x type, ford duratec

Question
Hi,

My Jaguar has recently developed a loud 'tappetty' noise, it occurred after a fairly long motorway journey, and when I checked the oil level it was below the dipstick ! - No oil warnings were displayed though.

I have had it looked at by an independent garage and they did a oil flush / change and additive add, but the noise continues.  It has been suggested that the problem might be down to an hydraulic lifter, but I understand the Jaguar version of the Ford Duratec 25 doesn't have hydraulic lifters.

Any ideas?

Answer
First why was the oil level down? The valves are operated by solid lifters. There has been a service bulletin issued regarding engine noises on this model, the answer apparently, is a different type of engine mount.  The cars affected are from C00294.  The bulletin No is; XT 303 .023
