How do I test the electrics on my cooling fan to find out if this is the reason why the car has recently started to overheat?

Does the fan come on at all? If you have AC it should come on automatically with the AIR.  If not check the fuses, then go to the connecter near the fan and disconnect it, use Jumper wires to give it a feed and an earth, the motor should turn, if not, it's a bad motor, if yes, it's something in the control system.
