UK Car Repair: rover 75 diesel 2001 se, engine thermostat, water gauge

Question
QUESTION: my rev counter and my heater gauge have gone off this also affects my air con and my heated rear window, The gauge sometimes comes back on and then goes off a gain any ideas please > cheers Dean
ANSWER: It is clearly a bad connection somewhere, the easiest thing to check is the fuse.  What other gauges do you have? The next check would be the plug into the back of the dash but it might be difficult to get to.

QUESTION: sorry i forgot to say the rest of the clocks are working fine inc speedo  and fuel gauges the milage and trip counters are all ok , my on board computer also goes off when this happens which tells me my fuel consumption  , miles left before running out of fuel, etc . cheers Dean

Answer
DEAN,  That makes it a little more of a puzzle. IT SEEMS LIKE THE TWO FAULTS ARE SEPARATE. Is it possible that someone accidentally disconnected anything? For the water gauge, check that the cable is connected at the sender  unit near the engine thermostat. As for the tacho it is most likely the transducer at the transmission BUT, you have to check the simple things first, fuses, connections etc.  There should be a chart on the fuse box cover which tells you what the fuses control- look for a connection to the inoperable items.
