UK Car Repair: 2001 Jaguar XJ8, jaguar xj8, independent garage

Question
Just recently I have begun having somewhat "minor" but "costly" things go wrong with my XJ8 (yes, out of warranty). First, the steering wheel column motor went out (will not swing away or go up or down). Is this something that a "regular" mechanic can repair or is this a dealership thing? Second, the cable in the driver door has broken. Result, door won't open. Is this something I can repair? Take the door panel off, replace the cable, etc. or again, should I go to the dealership.

Answer
Any of these problems can be repaired by a competent owner but first a little diagnosis is called for. Check the fuses for the servo motor. Then you have to gain access to both areas to assess the problem.  If you need to get help find a good independent garage, they are often faster and more economical than dealers.
