UK Car Repair: Vauxhaull Astra S reg radiator fan stuck on, vauxhaull astra, radiator fan

Question
Hi. I have just brought the S reg Astra, and the fan in the engine is permanently on. I've taken it to three garages and all say the AC unit radiator is missing, so looks like someone has re-wired stuff, so that the radiator fan is left on constantly.

Is it the fan controller unit I will need to buy to be, so that the fan can be re-connected so it isn't on constantly?
if so, can you suggest anywhere online that sells parts?
Thanks so much for your time in answering.

Tommy.

Answer
The fan operates two ways, anytime the AC is switched on, and, at preset engine temperatures.  There is a switch located near the thermostat which controls the on/off with engine temperature.  The most likely cause is that the wires to the switch have been connected together. If so reconnect them properly then get the engine hot somehow and see if the fan comes on.  An better option is to test the switch. Remove it, place it in a container on the stove to slowly heat it, now connect an ohmmeter to the terminals and place a thermostat beside it -you can use a deep socket to sit it in- and watch and see if the fan switch works and, at what temperature.
