Subaru Repair: Speedometer, Odometer, Check Engine Light, vehicle speed sensor, speedometer cable

Question
Thank you!  If this sensor is easy to install, I think I will go ahead and keep my fingers crossed.  I guess I will kick myself if it doesn't fix it!

I was watching while he was checking the code, but I should have made him write it down.  I know that it said there were two, but all I remember is P500 and I'm not sure of that.  Then the device said "speed sensor."  When he went to the parts computer and typed in my car, there was only one speed sensor in his menus.  I will let you know how it comes out.  But I can't get back to the computer until Monday and I noticed something about three days.

I went by Auto Zone and he said that I need a speed sensor.  He doesn't stock them, but can order me one.  I thought I saw on the Internet that there are two speed sensors.  Is that correct?  If it is, how can I be sure he will order the right one?  My son is going to put new brake shoes or pads or whatever on the car this weekend.  Is changing out the speed sensor something that he can do?  Do you have any tips for him?  Are there instructions on the Internet that you know of?

I was breezing down the Interstate in my 1998 Forrester when the speedometer dropped to zero and the check engine light came on.  Can you tell me what the repair will involve?  Do I need a new cable?  A new sensor?  Or something else?

Rebecca

You may need a new vehicle speed sensor; or, you may need a new speedometer head. On most cars, the speedometer cable is a thing of the past and no longer used so that is not your problem. You could also have a computer problem or wiring problem, but both of those are much less likely. Have someone read the code set when the check engine light came on, and go from there. Good luck.

Can Auto Zone or somewhere like that read the code?

Normally, yes they can - and usually it is free! The code will tell us what system caused the check engine light to come on, but it won't always tell us exactly which part has failed. But, we can sure make a good guess if you can get that code.

You are correct, there is more than one speed sensor on your car. Autozone is probably trying to sell you a vehicle speed sensor, which plugs into the transmission and through a wire, sends a signal to your engine and transmission computer. That is probably the sensor you need. It is a pretty easy fix too. There is a speed sensor inside the transmission, which is probably not your problem.

Did they tell you the actual code numbers that displayed? This would help me recommend replacing the vehicle speed sensor. If you buy the part and have your son replace the sensor, and that fixes the car, you will save alot of money. But, if that isn't it, it is money wasted.

Finally, it is also possible the speedometer head itself is bad. This, however, is the least likely.

Answer
Thanks for the nice feedback! I think, at the end of your feedback, you said the check engine light is on. You can go back to Autozone and have them clear it one more time. Or, you can drive it for a few days and it should reset on its own.

I am glad this worked out for you. Now no one has to be kicked!
