Volkswagen Repair: 2005 Jetta RPM question, torque converter, highway speeds

Question
Our 2005 Jetta's RPMs go over 3000 and stay there at higher speeds.  Mechanic found a leak, replaced gasket and filled transmission fluid.  Still revs over 3000 at 65 and up.  What is the normal RPM for highway speeds of 65-70 and what could be the problem.

Answer
Susan,
Assuming it's an automatic, 3000 RPM seems like the normal range.  But this also depends on the kind of transmission, how many gears, size of your tires and if the transmission has overdrive which will lower the RPMs.   If 3000 RPM is in fact NOT your normal experience and nothing else has changed, it is possible the torque converter (in the transmission) is slipping.
