Volkswagen Repair: 1975 bus, troubleshooting procedure, strangest thing

Question
rick, all of your advice has been great and very helpful. we finally got the bus running well, but the strangest thing happened. the bus stalled while backing up and when i went to re-start it, it started up fine and ran but the fuel pump would not stop running, even after the key was turned off??? i had to disconnect the battery to stop it. any ideas?

Answer
John,
The first thing I would check is the double relay, which controls the operation of the fuel pump.  It is located in the engine compartment (perhaps you already know this.)    Go here and you will find a good troubleshooting procedure if needed:

Here's another great explanation:

I have seen these get corroded internally.
Good job and good luck with the rest!
