Volkswagen Repair: VW TDI fixed injection pump leak but now wont start, vw jetta tdi, fuel injection pump

Question
QUESTION: My 1998 VW Jetta TDI had a problem overheating, fixed blown coolant out lines;
then noticed diesel fuel leaking out of fuel injection pump, replaced seal; now
just won't start.  Advice on what else to look for or tips on getting it started?

ANSWER: Leah,
 Overheating can cause other serious problems, including blown gaskets and cracked heads or engine cases.  I would get an engine compression check or leak down test to check the overall health of the engine.

QUESTION: Thanks Rick,
We replaced another seal in the fuel injection pump and finally got it started
but then the rpms would start out sluggish and suddenly rocket up to max.
We then fixed that by redoing the fuel injection pump assembly correctly, and
it starts and runs okay for now.  Do you still think we should take it in to get
tested?

Answer
Leah,
Good job getting it going.  As far as doing the compression tests, not required if it is running good.  However, I would watch the oil and coolant carefully for signs of cross contamination.  The oil will get "foamy" (looking on the dip stick), and the coolant might have oily film floating to the top of the radiator (looking into the filler cap).  Any of these symptoms would indicate a possible bad gasket or cracked head.  If found, don't waste any time getting it fixed because even worse damage could result (complete engine rebuild/replacement required.)
