Volkswagen Repair: VW Cabrio parking brake, vw cabrio, rear drums

Question
When I release the parking brake on my 2000 VW Cabrio the brake is still
engaged.  The brake light on the dashboard goes off, but you can feel that the
brake is engaged when you begin to drive.  How can I fix this?

Answer
Andrew,
It is quite unusual for the parking brake to be stuck when the handle is retracted.  You may have a crushed cable (perhaps during a recent trip to the shop, the car lift hit it) or the rear mechanism could be rusted up.  You can check by removing the rear wheels.  After that, it is different for rear disks vs. rear drums.  For disks, you should easily see the connection point of the cable.  For drums, you'll have to remove the drum in order to inspect the mechanism.
