Volkswagen Repair: brakes, vw golf 1, left hand side

Question
hi there. i have a 1994 vw golf 1.9 tdi. last night with out any signs the brake on the left hand side started grinding every time i put the brakes on, but it would stop every so often. how easy is it to replace the pads and what are the chances of the disks being damaged? thank you

Answer
Phil,
Chances are the front brake pads on this side have worn completely down to the metal.  You can definitely do the brake pads yourself.  However, the longer you drive it now, the greater the damage to the rotor, which of course should be replaced.  This is not difficult at all, after the calipers are removed, there is only one screw holding on the rotor.
By the way, if you have to do either the pads or the rotor, you should do BOTH sides; otherwise the brakes may pull to one side.
