ANSWER: Michael,
There are a quite a few things which can cause problems with ABS(brakes).  Yes, it could be a sensor and/or wire loose, but which one?  The ABS light is a very general indication of a more specific problem detected by the car's computer.  The best method to track down the problem is to scan the car with an OBD(On-Board Diagnostic) tester to obtain the DTC(s)(Diagnostic Test Codes) from the car's computer.  Passats from 1995-on will have OBD capability, you didn't say what year you have.  Any good repair shop will have one, it only takes a few minutes, but they usually charge you handsomely for this relatively easy service.
I you so choose, you can DIY.  Just buy an OBD-II tester starting at about $75 US (check out http://www.actron.com as one example; also eBay.)  Even with a cheap unit that only gives you the number codes, you can then look them up to see what they mean, on the web: http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes.  You can find the location of the OBD port at http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/applications/passat.html.  With this capability and knowledge you'll have a much better chance of fixing any problem yourself and potentially saving yourself lots of $$$.

QUESTION: Thank you for your quick response, as a follow up question, if it were you, what would be the best Actron OBD-ll you would buy, for me it has to be operator friendly (idiot proof), and needs to be clear in where the problems with the car are so I wont get conned by the authorised repairer. By the way its a 1998 vw 1.8T passat 60th anniversary edition.

The CP9175 would be a good unit.  It displays not only codes but their descriptions.  You can probably find one for considerably less than list price on eBay.
However, even with a code scanner, you need some basic understanding of your car's systems if you want to evaluate your mechanics diagnosis. I recommend getting the Official Bentley service manual, 98-05 version. Just make it a project to learn as much as you can.  You may not understand everything cover to cover, that's ok, you'll be surprised what you WILL learn and how much of a greater advantage it will put you at.
