Volkswagen Repair: 99 vw beetle, vw products, vw beetle

I have a '99 vw beetle with 95k. recently the high temp. dummy light came on while on the highway and long story short it overheated. in the process the water pump went and timing needs to be replaced. now the mechanic said there is an intermittent engine problem (from diagnostic test), and it may need a new engine ($2000 repair). can you explain & is that true?  thank you for your help

  I am sorry but I am unfamiliar with the newer VW products.  However, you probably should take the vehicle to another mechanic and see what he has to say...if both mechanics arrive at the same conclusion, I would be more inclined to believe that a serious problem exists.  Sorry I can't help you more.  Jerry
