Volkswagen Repair: 96 golf muffler, internal combustion engines, weep holes

Question
I have a 96 Golf GL 2L gas, auto, ABA, A3. Noticed a puddle right under the back of the muffler (closer to engine). Seems to be water. Was dripping out at back seam of muffler when car parked. Nothing comes out tailpipe when running. Could it just be muffler is tilted back a bit and condensation  collecting at he back of the muffler?

Answer
Hi Dawn;
You are very astute.  You have excellent powers of observation.  In fact, if you have the opportunity to look at the exhaust system in detail, and examine the individual components, you'll see small "weep holes" in all of the mufflers, or resonators.  Even the catalytic converter has one to allow the condensed moisture to escape from these "containers."  What many people are surprised to find out is, the single largest bi-product of internal combustion engines is water.  Good job.  I hope you enjoy your car for a long time.
