Volkswagen Repair: 2000 vw beetle, auto repair guide, drive shaft

Question
The inner cv joint boot is split and I bought a new one on line. I am going to replace it but am not sure what to do. Do I need to take the drive shaft completely out or can I just unbolt it from the transmission. Also will it come apart to get the small end on the shaft. I was also told just replace the hole thing boots and shaft. If I can get it repaired I am not sure about the clamps how do you squeeze them together.

Answer
HI;
You can replace the boot in the car, but it's far easier to remove the shaft to get at the boots, and shaft easier.  There is a "snap-ring" that holds the ends of the axle into the joints.  The inner, or plunge joint is best done with the boot cut off, and the grease wiped of to find the snap-ring opening.  There should be some specific directions in the "Bentley's" auto repair guide for your vehicle.
