Volkswagen Repair: 95 VW Jetta, vw jetta, cooling system

Question
I'm having a problem with my car overheating. Any suggestions on what I could do to fix it?

Answer
Hi Chris;
Did you replace a thermostat or anything like that recently?  If not, it is probably the thermostat staying closed when it should be open.  If you attempt to do this yourself, you need to know how to refill the Volkswagen cooling system properly.  The entire system needs to be evacuated down to a vacuum of at least 1.5 atmospheres.  There are special tools for this, and they require "shop air" or an air compressor that can generate 100 psi, and keep it up for about a minute or so, to completely evacuate, or remove all the air form the cooling system, then, using another fitting the coolant needs to be allowed to flow into the cooling system at that time.  One tool is called the "AIR LIFT."  There is no other way to refill a Volkswagen cooling system with any certainty.
