Volkswagen Repair: 73 beetle out of time, pistion, timming

Question
Hi, I got this beetle and I changed the fuel pump and now its Timming is off. I know I need to get the pistion to TDC but can you tell me wich Cyclinder is No. 1 and wich is 2,3,4. This would help me a great deal Thank You

Answer
Hi Matt;
The number 1 cylinder is the one that is farthest BACK on the engine, if the engine is in the car.  If you look carefully at the enigne you should be able to see that there are 2 cylinders that are very close to the same distance back, but the one that is farthest back is the number 1.  The one that is OPPOSITE is number 2, and then the other 2 in the front are 3, and 4.  3 will be the one that is farthest back of those 2.  It may take a little light, and a little patience, but you should be able to tell with confidence.  Just remember that the rod, has a little depth to it, and it is this "connecting rod" thickness that makes the distinction on the crankshaft.  I hope this is clear enough.  If you can't tell by looking, get a "Bentley's" repair manual, at the local library for your car, and look in it.  Hope this helps Matt.  Good luck.
